MCQUAID JESUIT
NAMES NEW PRESIDENT

Mr. William A. Hobbs

Rochester, N.Y., March 2, 2007…Mr. John W. Crowe, Chairman of the McQuaid Jesuit Board of Trustees, announced today that the board elected Mr. William A. Hobbs as McQuaid Jesuit’s 11th President. Hobbs, who has served as McQuaid Jesuit’s Principal since July 1, 2005, begins his presidency on July 1, 2007. He replaces Mr. James E. Whelehan, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

"Both the Board of Trustees, as well as the search committee, have been very impressed with Bill's leadership in his Principal position, and his profound understanding of Jesuit educational goals,” said Crowe. “His commitment to the Ignatian values of McQuaid Jesuit, as well as his significant experience as an Ignatian educator, made him the clear choice to be President."

Hobbs has an extensive background in Jesuit education. During his career, he has worked at Loyola-Blakefield in Towson, Md., St Joseph's Preparatory in Philadelphia and the Nativity Mission School in New York City. Prior to joining McQuaid Jesuit, Hobbs was Middle School Head at the Regis School of the Sacred Heart in Houston.

A New Jersey native, Hobbs earned an A.B. in Philosophy and Theology from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, and began his educational career as Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions at St. Joseph’s University. During that time, he attended the University’s graduate school, where he studied education and organizational development. He also worked at St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, a Jesuit secondary school, as Associate Director of College Counseling. He entered the Jesuit Novitiate in Wernersville, Pa. During his early Jesuit training, he taught at the Gesu School in Philadelphia, at St. Ignatius Loyola Academy’s HAP Program in Baltimore, and at the Nativity Mission School in New York City. He attended Fordham University and graduated with an M.A. in Adolescent Religious Development. He then returned to the Gesu Elementary School as Vice Principal, before accepting a position at Loyola-Blakefield Jesuit High School in Towson, Md., as a college counselor and middle school teacher. He spent seven years as a Jesuit before taking the opportunity at the Regis School. Hobbs’ experience includes professional development in media relations, communications, and team building. He is a member of the National Catholic Education Association and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

"Bill has demonstrated outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills in his duties as Principal. Additionally, he has an outstanding grasp of the mission of McQuaid Jesuit, and was integral to the development of the recently completed 2007-2011 McQuaid Jesuit Strategic Plan. We are delighted to have him in the role of President, working with alumni, parents, and the Rochester community to support our mission to provide a rigorous educational experience in the Jesuit tradition," said Crowe.

McQuaid Jesuit, named for the first Catholic Bishop of Rochester, the Most Rev. Bernard J. McQuaid, is a private, Jesuit College preparatory school for young men in grades 7-12. It is committed to fostering the development of the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional and aesthetic talents of young men through personal concern for each student, competitive educational programs, a distinctive Jesuit spirit, and a formative sense of community. In addition, McQuaid Jesuit offers financial aid to students in grades 9-12 who qualify academically but don’t have the financial resources to attend.
