Watching My Friend Die: The Honest Death of Bob Schwartz, by Democrat and Chronicle editorial writer Mark Hare. Bob Schwartz was McQuaid's beloved social studies and hockey coach who died in 1998 from cancer. The book details how death was Bob's final classroom and that he died as he lived - reaching out to and expanding his vast network of family and friends. The author also reflects on what he came to learn about life and death as well as himself during Bob's final months.
