CATHOLIC EDUCATION FOUNDATION HALL OF FAME
ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 23, 2007…The Catholic Education Foundation inducted McQuaid Jesuit chancellor Fr. James J. Fischer, S.J., into its Hall of Fame on Friday, March 23, during a ceremony in Washington.
Fr. Fischer, 83, served as McQuaid’s president from 1992 to 2003. His leadership strengthened the school’s enrollment and financial outlook, and improved the school’s physical plant. Among his accomplishments:
-
He was instrumental in adding a seventh grade in 1994 and creating a dedicated middle school program.
- He oversaw a capital campaign that added a 400-seat auditorium and multi-floor fine arts facility to McQuaid’s 32-acre campus in 2001.
- He was a key figure in the development of the 21,000-square-foot DiMarco Field House, which will be completed by the fall.
A Jersey City, N.J., native, Fr. Fischer entered the Society of Jesus in 1942 and was ordained in 1955. He taught high school and college mathematics before beginning his administrative career. Fr. Fischer was president of Regis High School in New York City for 12 years before arriving at McQuaid. He has degrees from Loyola Chicago, Bellarmine College (Indiana), Fordham University, Woodstock College and Le Moyne College.
Fr. Fischer is among 10 inductees into the Catholic Education Foundation 2007 Hall of Fame class. The class also includes Washington Archbishop Donald Wuerl.
