McQuaid Jesuit presents
Oscar Wilde’s
“The Importance of Being Earnest”
ROCHESTER, N.Y., MAY 23, 2007…It’s almost summer. Many high schoolers have checked out for the year…except a motivated group of McQuaid Jesuit and Our Lady of Mercy students who are putting on a full-scale theater production next week.
On Thursday, May 31 through Saturday, June 2, McQuaid Jesuit will feature the Mercy-McQuaid Players in Oscar Wilde’s brilliant light comedy “The Importance of Being Earnest.” The entirely student-run show will be held at McQuaid Jesuit, 1800 South Clinton Ave., and begins at 7:30 p.m. in McQuaid’s Hogenkamp Auditorium. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door.
This production is a collaboration between Mercy and McQuaid’s performing arts students. The play is staged and directed by Trevor Bachman, Alyssa Block, Patrick McHugh, and Kelsey Schroth; and has been made possible by the support of McQuaid Jesuit principal Bill Hobbs. The nine roles in the cast are played by some of the most accomplished young actors in Rochester. Combined, the cast has starred in more than 60 productions including shows at Geva, in community theatre, and in Mercy and McQuaid’s own productions over the last four years.
Oscar Wilde wrote the play in 1894, at the height of his creative abilities, having just finished “The Portrait of Dorian Gray.” World famous for his wit in “The Importance of Being Earnest,” Wilde reaches the pinnacle of English drawing room comedy.
McQuaid Jesuit, named for the first Catholic Bishop of Rochester, the Most Rev. Bernard J. McQuaid, is a private, Jesuit College preparatory school for young men in grades 7-12. In addition, McQuaid Jesuit offers financial aid to students in grades 9-12 who qualify academically but don’t have the financial resources to attend.
