When Fr. Bill O’Malley, S.J. was reassigned in 1986, he left us a gift that he called Phoenix, a history of the first 25 years of McQuaid existence. Thirty-four years would pass without an effort to produce a sequel covering the second 25 years. Throughout that period, we lost a great deal of “institutional memory,” leaving major holes in the recorded McQuaid story. Under any circumstances, we could not expect another Fr. O’Malley to come our way. Accordingly, the second Volume is quite different, but inevitably so. Volume II, Phoenix Soaring, speaks in multiple voices in each chapter, whereas in Volume I, Fr. O’Malley’s singular voice weaves personalities, events, issues, all elements of the McQuaid story into a unified history.
It is our hope that this volume, like the first, will be relevant and attractive to future cohorts of prospective students and their families. It reinforces our claim of being the pre-eminent college preparatory school in the region and articulates why McQuaid, while the best bet to prepare a young man to be a leader in the 21st Century, will also send him forth knowing what it takes to be a “Man for Others.”
