The Patriot Guard Riders of New York (PGRNY) held their seventh annual Heroes Run Saturday, June 15. The event benefits Help on the Homefront and New York Warrior Alliance. The event begins with a memorial ride of motorcycles and vehicles to a dedication site where a brief ceremony honoring a hero takes place and a remembrance object such as a bench or marker is placed bearing the name of the hero.
This year, the Annual Heroes Run started at the Greece American Legion Post 468 and proceeded to McQuaid Jesuit where a bench honoring US Navy Boatswains Mate First Class (BM1) Michael J. Pernaselli, ’95 was placed on campus. BM1 Pernaselli, assigned to the Visit Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) Team aboard the USN CYCLONE Class (COASTAL DEFENSE SHIP) USS FIREBOLT (PC 10), was killed in 2004 when an unidentified Dhow exploded as the Team was conducting Maritime Interception Operations in the Northern Arabian Sea.
BM1 Pernaselli joined the military following his 1995 graduation from McQuaid. He had previously toured the Persian Gulf and Kosovo, and, in January 2004, was sent back to the Gulf to serve on the USS FIREBOLT. He once excelled at splatball and was a devoted pro wrestling fan.
