Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the McQuaid igKNIGHTers (FRC Robotics Team 3173) will compete at the Finger Lakes Regional tournament Friday and Saturday, March 15-16. The event is from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at RIT in the Gordon Field House. The region’s largest robotics competition, the Finger Lakes Regional, will feature more than 50 teams from around the world vying for a chance to advance to the World Championship fin Detroit.
This year’s theme, Destination Deep Space, features multiple rocket ships on the playing field requiring the robots to attach hatches and fill the rockets with cargo to accumulate points and then climb to the elevated habitat. Teams compete in groups of three playing against other school’s teams. Top scoring teams advance to the playoffs and eventually the finals. It’s as fun and exciting to watch as any sport. In fact, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science & Technology) Robotics is well known by its members as the hardest fun you’ll ever have!
McQuaid Jesuit sponsors three “competitive” FIRST Robotics teams: FIRST “igKNIGHTers” Robotics (high school), FIRST Tech (Grades 7-12), and FIRST Lego (middle school). The igKNIGHTers are supported by corporate sponsors Xylem, Xerox, ROC Supply, Javlyn Engineering, EG Industries, and Delphi, in addition to McQuaid Jesuit and anonymous individuals. The igKNIGHTers are coached by McQuaid parents, alumni and friends who are leaders and experts in their engineering, programming and business fields.
