McQuaid Announces Change in Leadership

Philip Judge, S.J.

McQuaid Jesuit today announced that Rev. Philip G. Judge, S.J. will succeed Rev. Robert E. Reiser, S.J. as the school’s 14th president effective July 1, 2020.

In May, Fr. Reiser announced to the school’s board of trustees that he would step down as president following the 2019-20 academic year. Over the summer, members of the board implemented a process to find Fr. Reiser’s successor.

“Fr. Reiser has been an excellent leader of McQuaid Jesuit over the past five years; advancing the school in its mission through the strengthening of our faculty and administration as well as improving the school’s physical plant with the addition of the Wegman Family Science and Technology Center,” says Philip Pecora, chair of McQuaid Jesuit’s Board of Trustees. “We are saddened to see Fr. Reiser leave us, however we have great confidence in Fr. Phil Judge and are excited to have him return to the school as our next president.”

Fr. Judge is familiar with McQuaid having taught English and theology at the school from 1986-89 as a Jesuit Scholastic. Following assignments at Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx, NY and Regis High School in New York City, Fr. Judge returned to McQuaid in 2000 as principal. In 2005 he was named the 21st president of Regis High School, leading his high school alma mater for 10 years. Since 2015, Fr. Judge has served as provincial assistant for strategic operations and planning in the USA Northeast Jesuit province.

Fr. Judge, who entered the Society of Jesus in 1980 and was ordained in 1993, completed undergraduate and graduate degrees at Fordham University, theology studies at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, CA, and an additional graduate degree in English at the University of California at Berkeley. In July 2014, he was named the McQuaid’s 13th president, succeeding Rev. Edward F. Salmon, S.J. Prior to his return, Fr. Reiser spent seven years as president of St. Peter’s Preparatory School, an all-male, Jesuit high school in Jersey City, NJ.

A native of Buffalo, Fr. Reiser attended Canisius High School in Buffalo. He graduated from Canisius College with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and has a master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School, the University of Rochester, Fordham University, and Weston Jesuit School of Theology.
