Last week, McQuaid Jesuit observed National Migration Week by making time to learn more about migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. On Tuesday, Ms. Charlsey Bickett from Mary’s Place Refugee Outreach spoke with students about the realities of the international refugee crisis and how resettlement works in the Rochester area. On Friday students were privileged to hear the story of Mr. Ninteretse Jean Pierre. Now a lawyer, Mr. Jean Pierre originally came to the U.S. as a refugee from Rwanda. After spending fourteen years in a refugee camp following the Rwandan genocide, Mr. Jean Pierre and his family were resettled in the Rochester area. Then students wrote letters of support to women currently being detained because of their immigration status at an event hosted by Campus Ministry and the Mosaic Club.
