There is still a whole month of summer left to enjoy – thank goodness. But as our boys manage their summer reading assignments, it is also time to start planning our calendars for fall. To help jump start the new school year, check out the upcomg Parents’ Association events.

UPCOMING PA EVENTS:

McQ Garment Sale – Saturday, August 25 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Come one, come all to our annual Garment Sale!! Stop by McQuaid Jesuit on Saturday, August 25, to start your back-to-school shopping! We have a wide inventory of “gently used” apparel items to help your son transition out of his summer casual wear into his fast approaching required McQ dress code for the school year. The “store,” located in front of the McQ Bookstore, will be open from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
All items will sell for a nominal amount or donation. Please note: cash or check only.

Welcome Liturgy and Pizza Party – Sunday, September 9 at 5 p.m.
Bring a blanket or chair, and welcome in the new school year with faith, family, and food! Please join us for our annual McQuaid Outdoor Welcome Liturgy and Casual Dinner. We will begin with a Mass welcoming your sons and their families, followed by a casual dinner on the new Carriero Commons. Rain or shine, we welcome all Knights and their families to start the new school year off on a great note!

PA Welcome Back Meeting/Social – Wednesday, September 26 at 7 p.m.
The Parents’ Association at McQuaid is a fun, energetic group and it includes YOU! So begin the new school year by coming to our first meeting. It’s a great way to meet fellow parents and become involved with school activities. While enjoying some refreshments, you will also hear about highlights for the upcoming year.

Save the date: Wine & Beer Party – Saturday, October 13
The Parents’ Association is hosting a Wine and Beer Tasting get-together. This event provides parents the opportunity to visit with each other in a casual environment and to meet new McQ parents. Fine wines and unique beers are served along with hors d’oeuvres. Mark your calendar and look for more details in September.

Save the date: 2nd Annual McQuaid Fashion Show – Sunday, October 28 at 11 a.m.
Join us at Shadow Lake Golf and Racquet Club for our 2nd Annual Fashion Show. Enjoy a lovely lunch with friends, take a chance on some beautiful raffles (including BASH 2019 Tickets!) and start your Christmas wish list with some of our amazing fashions and accessories. McQuaid students and family models will be showing off fashions from J.Crew Outlet, Paislee Boutique, Cabi, Joeval’s Formalwear, McQuaid bookstore and more. Emceed by our very own Lia Lando, P ’22. More details and ticket information will be available in September.

Lawn Signs
Show your McQ pride and support the Parents’ Association by purchasing a lawn sign which displays the McQuaid logo and colors. The lawn signs are now available for sale in the bookstore and all proceeds go to the Parents’ Association to support future activities and speakers. Be sure to pick one up during your next visit to the bookstore, click here for hours.

Keep clipping your Box Tops (located on many cereals, snacks, and household goods). McQuaid Jesuit will be participating in the Boxtops 4 Education program this school year. Look for more details in future newsletters.

Mercy & McQuaid (M&M) Service

Share an evening to help create pillows for breast cancer patients to use under vehicle seat belts.   For more information and to volunteer click here.

  • Open Door Mission PB&J Sandwich Factory – Tuesday, November 6 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Join in making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless at the Open Door Mission Samaritan House.  This event is limited to ten volunteers.  For more details click here.

Welcome to autumn — like a second spring where the leaves are as colorful as flowers. It’s a great time to come out and participate or volunteer in one of our upcoming events.

UPCOMING PA EVENTS:

PA Wine & Beer Social – Saturday, October 13,  7 – 10 p.m.
The Parents’ Association is hosting a Wine and Beer Social featuring wine and beer from Lake Beverage – the sponsors of this fun event! We plan on launching the first installment of this year’s speaker series, a collaboration between the Parents’ Association and the Principal’s office.  The timely topic will be “Saving for College”.  All middle and high school parents are invited. 2nd Annual McQuaid Fashion Show – Sunday, October 28, 11 a.m.
Join us at Shadow Lake Golf and Racquet Club for our 2nd Annual Fashion Show. Enjoy a lovely lunch reception with friends, place a bid in the gift basket auction, and take a chance on special raffles (BASH 2019 Tickets and Lululemon products). McQuaid students and family models will be showing off fashions from Joeval’s formalwear, Paislee Boutique, Cabi, Orvis, and our own McQuaid bookstore. Click here for more details and to register.

The Women’s Care Center is in need of volunteers to offer loving hospitality to new moms and women in unexpected pregnancies. The center is run by Director Holly Harvey, a McQuaid mom class of ‘18. This opportunity is limited to ten volunteers. If you are unable to volunteer please consider a donation of needed items or a monetary donation. Click here for more details and to sign up.

May our lives be full of both thanks and giving this November.  In the spirit of giving, check out the volunteer opportunities this month and consider getting involved by participating in an event.

UPCOMING PA EVENTS:

Teacher Appreciation/Faculty and Staff Luncheon – Wednesday, November 14, 2:15 p.m.
Once a year, parents host a luncheon for the teachers and staff to express our gratitude for all they do for the McQuaid community. You can help with this event in a variety of ways. Contributions are needed for gift cards that will be raffled off to the faculty and staff in attendance. Please click here to contribute your gifts. You may also volunteer your time and talents on the day of the event. Help is needed in numerous ways, such as preparing food, setting up, and serving. Click here for more information and to volunteer.

Barnes & Noble Book Fair – Sunday, November 18, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Come support the McQuaid Parents’ Association and get some holiday shopping done at the Barnes and Noble bookstore in Pittsford at 3349 Monroe Avenue. Ten percent of ALL proceeds from the store and the cafe will benefit the PA future events and activities.

New this year is a joint promotion between McQuaid and Barnes and Noble to celebrate the opening of the Harry Potter movie, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Events in the store from 11:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. will include Magical Makerspaces, children’s coloring stations, and Harry Potter trivia contests for teenagers and adults, including prizes.

Local fantasy author Jeff Minerd will also be signing books at the store from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. His young adult novels, The Sailweaver’s Son and The Wizard’s Daughter, have earned great reviews and he is in the running for the Rochester’s Choice Award for Best Author.

This event is filled with activities for the whole family, so come out, enjoy, and start your holiday shopping while benefiting our Parents’ Association. There are also plenty of opportunities to volunteer and earn service hours during the event. Click here for more volunteer information.

Can’t make it to the fair?  Shop online November 19-23 at bn.com. Be sure to scroll down on the Payment Method screen and Apply Bookfair ID = 12316576 to support our McQuaid Parents’ Association.  You can also shop in the store on those days and still contribute — just bring the bookfair id with you to the register.

Mothers for Others’ Events:

  • Open Door Mission PB&J Sandwich Factory – Tuesday, November 6, 10 a.m. – Noon
    Join in making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless at the Open Door Mission Samaritan House Crisis Center. The center is dedicated to offering hope, shelter, and a warm meal to the homeless. Volunteering for this event includes a tour of the center, an orientation, and the  making of PB&J sandwiches in an assembly line fashion. There is a limit of ten volunteers.   • Bethany House Holiday Spirit – Thursday, November 15, 10 a.m. – Noon
    Help spread some holiday cheer for the families at the Bethany House, an emergency shelter which serves the needs of homeless women and children in our area. We will be making pies and casseroles that will be frozen for the residents to use at the holidays. Come get into the holiday spirit by decorating their home and wrapping gifts. There is a limit of eight volunteers. For more details and to sign up click here.

  • House of Mercy Warehouse Work – Sunday, November 18, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

PA Wine & Beer Social
Thanks to all who attended the Wine & Beer Social in October. It was a wonderful evening in the Wegman Center Atrium filled with mingling and the tasting of excellent beverages. Click here to see pictures from the event.

Mothers for Others Breast Cancer Pillows
A special thank you to the wonderful MFOs who made over fifty pillows for breast cancer patients. It was an evening of sewing, socializing, and bonding. The pillows will hopefully help those with breast cancer ports sleep a little more comfortably. To see pictures from the event, click here.

Advent Liturgy / Senior Parent Reception – Friday, December 21, 8 – 11 a.m.
Senior parents’ attendance at the Advent Liturgy is a beautiful tradition to start the holiday season. A reception is held in Keenan Hall for the senior class of 2019 and their families immediately following the liturgy. Please help make it special by volunteering your time or donating treats to share. Click here to volunteer.

Calling all fathers, grandfathers, uncles, male role models! Join your McQ student for our annual Father/Son Mass and Brunch scheduled for Sunday, January 27 in the McQuaid Jesuit Chapel. Following Mass enjoy a delicious brunch while tuning in for words of wisdom from guest speaker John Murphy, the voice of the Buffalo Bills. Register by clicking here.

The National Honor Society recognition ceremony is a celebration of the hard work and dedication of the new McQuaid NHS inductees. A reception following the ceremony is held outside the chapel.   • Salvation Army Bell Ringers – Saturday, December 8
    Join in the sound of the season by volunteering for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. Various shifts are available for students and adults at numerous locations at Eastview Mall. Click here for more information and to sign up.

Mothers for Others Bethany House Holiday Spirit
A special thank you to the MFOs who brought some holiday cheer to the Bethany House. They made pies and casseroles that were frozen for the families at the house to use over the holidays. Barnes & Noble Book Fair
Thanks to all who volunteered, performed, and attended the book fair on November 18. Ten percent of your purchases will benefit the Parents’ Association.  Your support is appreciated. Father/Son Communion Breakfast – Sunday, January 27, 9 a.m.
Calling all fathers, grandfathers, uncles, male role models! Join your McQ student for our annual Father/Son Mass and Brunch scheduled for Sunday, January 27 in the McQuaid Jesuit Chapel. Following Mass enjoy a delicious brunch while tuning in for words of wisdom from guest speaker John Murphy, the voice of the Buffalo Bills Network. To register, click here.

Middle School Mixer – Friday, March 8, 7 – 9 p.m.
Parents of  7th and 8th graders, let’s meet for a middle school mixer!  The event will coincide with the 7th and 8th Grade Activity Night that will be held at the same time. So drop off your middle schooler and head upstairs for an enjoyable social with food, beer, wine, soda, and fun!  Please note 6th grade parents are invited to the mixer, but the Activity Night is for 7th and 8th graders only. Volunteers are also needed to provide appetizers, finger-desserts, water, soda and to assist with the setup and clean up. For more details and to volunteer, click here. Save the date: Mother/Son Dance – Saturday, March 9
A highlight of the year for the moms of McQuaid high school students is the Mother/Son Dance, also known as the “Mom Prom”. High schoolers enjoy an evening of dinner and dancing with their moms and those who serve our students as mothers. Mark your calendar and look for more details to come.

UPCOMING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

Calling All Bakers!
Do you love to bake? If so, please share your talent and add your name to the list of McQuaid bakers. The Parent’s Association sponsors numerous events throughout the academic year and baked/donated goods are always needed and appreciated. When events are low on volunteers, this list can be used to notify our bakers that their support is needed. No minimum commitment is necessary and store bought treats are helpful if you find you don’t have time to bake. This is a great way to support the school community without having to be on hand for events. Your treats can typically be dropped off before the event. Mercy & McQuaid (M&M) Service:

  • St. John’s Home Bingo Helpers – Saturday, January 12, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.

7th and 8th graders from Mercy and McQuaid are needed to assist residents at the St. John’s Home in playing bingo. Please consider sharing your time with some senior residents of our community.  Click here for more information and to volunteer.

Winter is upon us, but don’t let the snow and falling temperatures keep you from our fun events or our volunteer opportunities. From Lenten retreats to social mixers and from baking to bingo volunteers — there’s lots to do this winter!

UPCOMING PA EVENTS:

National Honor Society Reception – Thursday, February 28, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
The National Honor Society recognition ceremony is a celebration of the hard work and dedication of the new McQuaid NHS inductees. A reception following the ceremony is held outside the chapel. Volunteers are needed to provide finger desserts and drinks, and to help during the event. Please click here to volunteer.

Mother/Son Lenten Retreat – Sunday, March 3, 4 – 6 p.m.
Using great moments, memories and experiences  from our lives, we will “journey down memory lane” to discover the moments where God was most present in the gift of the Mother-Son Relationship. Pizza will be served! Click here to register for this incredible event. Note that it is free to all McQ students and their moms/female role models. The registration is needed for headcount purposes only.

Middle School Mixer – Friday, March 8, 7 – 9 p.m.
Parents of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, let’s meet for a middle school mixer. The event will coincide with the 7th and 8th Grade Activity Night that will be held at the same time. So drop off your middle schooler and head upstairs to the Middle School Atrium for an enjoyable social with food, beer, wine, soda, and fun!  Please note 6th grade parents are invited to the mixer, but the Activity Night is for 7th and 8th graders only. Volunteers are also needed to provide appetizers, finger-desserts, water, soda and to assist with the setup and clean up. For more details and to volunteer, click here. Mother/Son Dance – Saturday, March 9, 6 – 11 p.m.
​​​​​​​Attention high schoolers! Enjoy an evening of dinner and dancing with your mom or female role model at the Mom Prom. This year’s event will be held at the Doubletree Inn in Henrietta. Save the date: PA Speaker Series – Monday, March 18, 7 p.m.
Please join us for the second installment of this year’s Speaker Series, co-sponsored by the Principal’s office. We are presenting a multidisciplinary panel and talk on the topic of substance use, particularly vaping. This topic is affecting our school and our PA community will be addressing its medical, psychological, and social effects, as well as ways to communicate proactively with our sons. You won’t want to miss this extremely important event! Stay tuned for more details.

Save the date: Ignatian Yoga – Saturday, April 6
Whether you are experienced or a novice come share in a yoga class and exercise your body, mind, and spirit. Mark your calendar and look for more details to come.

Calling All Bakers!
Do you love to bake? If so, please share your talent and add your name to the list of McQuaid bakers. The Parent’s Association sponsors numerous events throughout the academic year and baked/donated goods are always needed and appreciated. When events are low on volunteers, this list can be used to notify our bakers that their support is needed. No minimum commitment is necessary and store bought treats are helpful if you find you don’t have time to bake. This is a great way to support the school community without having to be on hand for events. Your treats can typically be dropped off before the event. Mercy & McQuaid (M&M) Service:

  • House of Mercy Homeless Shelter Cafe Night Helpers – Friday, February 1, 6 – 8 p.m.

9th and 10th graders from Mercy and McQuaid, along with parent chaperones, are needed to assist with Cafe Night Bingo at the House of Mercy Homeless Shelter. Come out and help contribute to an evening  of fun and games for the guests of the shelter. Popcorn and small gift certificate prizes are also needed.   • St. John’s Home Bingo Helpers – Saturday, March 9, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.

7th and 8th graders from Mercy and McQuaid are needed to assist residents at the St. John’s Home in playing bingo. Please consider sharing your time and smile with some senior residents of our community. To volunteer and for more information, click here.

McQuaid Yearbook – The Accolade
The Accolade is a collection of everything McQuaid with pages devoted to activities, art, faculty, plays, students, sports, and more! The yearbook is currently available for $65 per book and will remain at this discounted price until February 22. After the discount expires, the price will be $70. All graduating seniors are provided a copy as part of their senior fees. Senior parents DO NOT need to purchase one unless they want an extra copy.  

Accolade orders should be placed online directly with Jostens at the link below before the April 22 deadline. There is no guarantee there will be copies after the final ordering deadline, but you may check with the Bookstore a few days after Memorial Day to find out if there are extra copies available for purchase.

Mother/Son Lenten Reflection – Sunday, March 3, 4 – 6 p.m.
If you have not done so already, please register for this wonderful two hour reflection with your son! It is free of charge and pizza will be served. Dr. Zynda, the moderator of this reflection, has asked that you bring two of your most precious photos of your son. The pictures can be from any part of his life. Our fourth annual Mother/Son event promises to be memorable as we take a walk down memory lane with our boys. Do not miss it!  Click here to register for this incredible event.

Father/Son Communion Brunch
It was a great Sunday for all who attended the Father/Son Communion Brunch. The event included mass, delicious food, and words of wisdom from speaker John Murphy, the voice of the Buffalo Bills. Check out photos by clicking here and be sure to join us for the event next year.

House of Mercy Homeless Shelter Game Night
Special thanks to the Mercy & McQuaid Service volunteers who participated in game night at the House of Mercy Homeless Shelter in February. Thank you to all of the 240 mothers and sons who attended the Mom Prom on March 9. A special thank you to Karen Brydges and Michelle Young, who spent countless hours planning the massive event. Thanks to everyone who came to the PA Speaker Series in March. Our multidisciplinary panel imparted very useful, as well as eye-opening, information about vaping. UPCOMING PA EVENTS:

Nurses Day – Monday, May 6
In celebration of National Nurses Day, we will be recognizing the important role our school nurses, Pat McDonnell, RN and Christine Jones, RN, perform in serving our McQuaid school community. They will both be presented with a special gift as an expression of our gratitude and appreciation for all that they do to help maintain the safety and health of our students.

McQ Decision Day 2019 – Tuesday, May 7
Calling all Senior Parents! We will be celebrating your sons’ decisions regarding what comes in the next chapter of their lives, following their graduation from McQuaid. This celebration will last throughout the school day and is for senior students only (no parents). Volunteers are needed to bring in treats and beverages for your sons to enjoy; please drop them off by 3 p.m. on Monday, May 6. Click here to help. As always, thank you for your continued partnership in creating great men at McQ!

Junior Mass and Ring Ceremony – Thursday, May 16, 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church
This is a celebration Mass for juniors in preparation for their transition to becoming next year’s seniors and leaders of the school. Class rings will also be blessed as part of this event. All juniors and their families are welcome and encouraged to attend, regardless of whether a class ring was purchased. The event will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes, 150 Varinna Drive in Brighton. A reception will follow the ceremony.

Senior Parent Send-Off – Thursday, May 23, 6 – 8 p.m.
All parents and guardians of senior students are invited to the annual Senior Parent Send-Off. This farewell and thank you happy hour for our senior parents will be held on the John Carriero, S.J. Commons. Come celebrate the great school year with your fellow senior parents. Live music, drinks, and light hors d’oeuvres will be served.

8th Grade Promotion Ceremony – Thursday, June 13, 6:30 p.m.
This fun filled evening celebrates the transition of the Class of 2023 from Middle School to High School. The ceremony takes place in the gym with a reception immediately following in Keenan Hall. Volunteers are needed to provide baked goods and to assist with set up, serving, and clean up. Please click here to volunteer.

Wanted: McQ Garment Sale Donations
It’s springtime — that time of year when you take inventory of your son’s closet and discover all those things he has outgrown. Please consider donating those McQ dress code items, including sport coats, belts, shirts, and pants, that are in excellent condition. Your donations will be included in our popular fall garment sale. Kindly clean and hang the sport coats and shirts, and neatly bag the rest and drop them off in the front office from now until the end of May. AMDG!

  • Urban Choice Charter School-Youth After School Program – Thursday, May 2, 3:45 – 6:30 p.m.
    The Center for Youth after school program for K-8 students and their parents is designed to give families an opportunity to connect. Mercy and McQuaid student volunteers, along with a few parent volunteers, are needed to assist children through the activity stations at the Urban Choice Charter School at 545 Humboldt Street. Ignatian Yoga Retreat for Moms
Thanks to everyone who participated in the first ever morning of Ignatian yoga. A special thanks to Tracey Bors and Damian Zynda, who led the Jesuit mothers during the retreat. GOOD NEWS:

Senior Parent Send-Off
The McQ cafeteria was transformed into a festive atmosphere as parents/guardians of the Class of 2019 celebrated together on May 23. With the beautiful voice of our own Amy Sheffer, Administrative Assistant for Athletics, singing in the background and delicious hors d’oeuvres overflowing on the tables, the parents/guardians were able to share their fond memories at McQuaid Jesuit!  Whether it was recounting a tale from a musical or a win on the football field, they were able to connect and enjoy the last couple of weeks at McQuaid. Congratulations on your son’s graduation!

A big thank you to everyone in the McQuaid community who attended and volunteered at our many events. Your participation and support is what makes them a success! Mothers for Others
A special thank you to Connie DiFelice (P ‘19) for her many years of leadership and service to Mothers for Others. Connie started Mothers for Others with a vision to follow in her grandmother’s footsteps and selflessly serve people in need. We appreciate all she has done for our McQuaid family and the community   She will be missed! Please welcome Glenna Colaprete (P ‘21) as the new Mothers for Others co-chair. Glenna has been invaluable to MFO updating the website and volunteering. This summer Glenna will be busy working alongside Alicia Smith (P ‘19, ‘21, ‘24) planning exciting MFO events for the next school year.

On behalf of McQuaid’s newly constituted “McQ Fathers” group, Joe Eduardo (P ’89, ’02, ’21), Tim Flaherty (P ’20, ’22) and Doug Jeff (P, ’24) invite all McQuaid Jesuit fathers and guardians, and their sons to join them at our annual “Knight at the Ballpark.”   At the ballpark, please introduce yourself to Joe, Tim and Doug, and express any interest you may have in joining this group.  Together with our sons, we hope to enhance our community while promoting the father/son relationship!  

Service – Relay for Life (June 15 at McQuaid)
Spirituality – Father Son Communion Breakfast
Social – Knight at the Ballpark (July 11 at Frontier Field)
In addition, we have several ideas for other father/son service activities such as:

o VFW
o Veterans’ Outreach
o Charity Sporting Events
o Foodlink
o Community Clean Up
o Nursing Homes

We look forward to many meaning and good times ahead!

Host Families Needed
McQuaid’s International Student Program is looking for host families and we need your help!  If you, or someone you know, are interested in hosting international students and experiencing different cultures, please do not hesitate to contact McQuaid. As a host family, you would be providing the student with housing and specific amenities, as well as assisting the student in learning the local customs and transportation systems.  Help the student become acquainted with the American lifestyle and please contact Yinghua Yang, Director of International Student Program, at yyang@mcquaid.org.
