May 2021
Doesn’t it feel like we are definitely starting the final countdown to this incredible school year? May is here and as we reflect back on the year that we couldn’t imagine – we have almost gotten through it and this McQuaid community is still going strong. Let us enjoy this busy month of May – cheering on our teams and clubs, honoring our seniors, and tackling the last full month of school for our undergrads.
We are looking for new parents to join our team – check out some volunteer openings below – all parents and guardians are part of the Parents’ Association and we would love to have your help. Keep up-to-date and informed by visiting our website here.
CELEBRATING OUR SENIORS:
Senior Decision Day – May 3rd
Senior Decision Day for the McQuaid Class of 2021 will be held on Monday, May 3rd! The Counseling Department, along with the entire school community, will be celebrating the Seniors’ post-McQuaid plans.
Thank you to all of the parents who donated food items to support this event!
SPRING CLEANING? SEEKING McQ APPAREL DONATIONS
My Brother’s Closet
Each year the Parents’ Association gathers donated clothing items and accessories from current students. In the summer we host a garment sale to help raise funds for the Parents’ Association events and activities. Have items that you could donate? We would love to receive them and add them to our inventory of “gently used” apparel to help our students dress for their required McQ dress code for the school year. You can drop off your donations at the front entrance, by May 31. Thank you for your support!
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
Teacher Appreciation
On Friday, April 30 the PA hosted a teacher appreciation luncheon for all faculty and staff at McQuaid. We want to thank all parents who volunteered time, food and drink, money, and gift cards to this event. An extra special thank you to Glenna Colaprete, P ’21 and Mary Marrocco, P ’21 who ran this event this year and who have overseen this PA event for many years. We appreciate your time and efforts to make this event come to life to show how grateful we are to the wonderful staff at McQuaid!
McQuaid Summer Programs open for registration
McQuaid Jesuit offers a variety of programs during the summer months for academic acceleration and enrichment, as well as athletics, music, service opportunities, and more. We are pleased to offer in-person instruction and coaching for all of our programs for summer 2021, following current COVID-19 protocol regarding masking, sanitizing, and distancing. For a list of the offerings and more information click here.
Knight Quest 2030 is underway
Father Judge and the Advancement staff at McQuaid have introduced Knight Quest 2030; a 10-year plan for what the future looks like at McQuaid. This plan includes increasing McQuaid’s endowment to support sustainability, increasing financial aid given to students, investing in McQuaid’s physical campus, building infrastructure to support alumni relations, and ensuring that the core mission of Ignatian spirituality is fully supported in the future. It is an exciting path that the school, parents, and alumni are all a part of and we hope you can participate in building this future too. For more information click here.
Service Hour Updates (including Virtual opportunities) from Mission and Ministry
In-person service opportunities continue to adapt to the COVID-19 landscape. Mr. Verghese, SJ, Director of Service and Justice, has updated the service requirements for all grade levels. Please take a look at the updated requirements under your specific school year (including virtual opportunities) at this link.
HELP WANTED:
Volunteer for McQuaid Parents’ Association 2021-2022
All parents/guardians of McQuaid students are part of the McQuaid Parents’ Association. Our PA Executive Committee is continually planning for activities and you are invited to become involved. Share your time and talents by volunteering as little or as much fits your schedule. Check the “Parent” tab on the McQuaid website regularly for opportunities. If you have any ideas of how we can better serve you, please contact us at pa@mcquaid.org. We would love you to join our team of volunteers!
Seeking: PA Website & SignUpGenius Coordinator
The McQuaid Parents’ Association is seeking a detail-oriented individual to manage information on the PA portion of the McQuaid website. This position involves reviewing information on the PA website for accuracy and working with McQuaid’s Director of Special Events & Parent Relations to make updates and changes to the site. No experience creating or editing websites is necessary. The SignUpGenius component of this position involves collaborating with Event Chairs to create sign-ups for volunteers and donations. If interested, email pa@mcquaid.org.
Seeking: Newsletter Editor
Each month the newsletter editor will be responsible for gathering information to share with all the parents. This person does not have to do any in-person or on-campus work and can do this job from the convenience of their home. We are looking for someone who is willing to reach out to event coordinators to request information and who has a basic understanding of google docs. There are plenty of sample newsletters available to learn from, as our PA events typically follow a similar pattern each year so you do not have to create anything from scratch. The volunteer will need to be available starting in July to prepare for the first newsletter in August. If interested, email pa@mcquaid.org.

So help support McQuaid each time you shop by setting up smile.amazon.com as your Amazon home page. April 2021
“April prepares her green traffic light and the world thinks, ‘Go!’ “– Christopher Morley. It certainly feels like there is action on the horizon as we welcome the warmer weather, more sunshine, and that burst of energy that comes when looking toward the 4th quarter of the school year. We continue to prepare for the future here at McQuaid by supporting and connecting our parents to the school and look forward to when we can gather together to help build that community and spirit that we all love so much. Keep up-to-date and informed by visiting our website here.
BASH
BASH 2021 certainly was a BASH like no other! In recapping a year of events that has been anything but normal, we are excited to announce that, despite the obstacles before us, BASH was a huge success! In total $428,975 was raised through sponsorships, auctions, raffles, virtual tickets and dinners. The Arrupe Fund also surpassed its $100,000 goal which will support students with financial needs beyond tuition this coming school year.
Thank you to all who participated in our fundraisers over the past 3 months and to those who volunteered. We are incredibly grateful for your time and support of this important event. In addition, a special thank you to this year’s co-chairs, Pam & Craig Cairns, P ’06, ’14, ’16, ’18, ’21, ’28; Patti & Tim Doerr, P ’13, ’17, 21; and Anne & Ted Smith, ’81, P ’21, who led the charge to pull off BASH virtually.
We look forward to (hopefully) celebrating BASH 2022 together in the DiMarco Field House.
If you would like to watch the entire program from BASH, you can view it here.
CELEBRATING OUR SENIORS
We continue to recognize our senior class at McQuaid. For March, it seemed appropriate to allow the boys to incorporate some basketball fun, so on Sunday, March 21 McQuaid hosted March Madness for Dads and Grads.
The seniors and their fathes, or father figures, were invited to campus to celebrate Mass together, enjoy lunch from a variety of food truck choices, and watch the NCAA basketball tournament on the big screen. It was a fun day for all who attended. Thank you to the staff and parents who made this event happen.
Senior Moms – Mother Son Ignatian Retreat
Keep an eye out this month for information on a very special Mother Son retreat. Dr. Zynda and Mr. Drahms will be offering this retreat sometime in late April, before AP exams. More information will be forthcoming from the Mission & Ministry Office.
Save the date (May 3rd) and a request for volunteers
Senior Decision Day for the McQuaid Class of 2021 will be held on Monday, May 3rd! The Counseling Department, along with the entire school community, will be celebrating the Seniors’ post-McQuaid plans. McQuaid parents and guardians are invited to share in the recognition of the Senior Class members by contributing snacks or beverages to this fun event. To sign up, please click here. Thank you!

Community Welcomes Xavier Day Keynote Speaker
On Friday, March 12, McQuaid welcomed Mr. Shane Wiegand, an elementary school teacher in the Rush-Henrietta school district who has developed an extensive anti-racism curriculum with a focus on policies that created the segregated region we live in today. He has presented in a number of local schools, adapting his presentation for different ages and audiences.
Mr. Wiegand spoke about the policies and laws that have resulted in de facto segregation that continues to this day and challenged us all to help build a more just and equitable community. His talk may be viewed by clicking here.
As a Jesuit school, we pride ourselves in forming young men who are loving, religious, open to growth, intellectually competent, and committed to justice. Mr. Wiegand’s presentation hit on all five of these categories. If we are to be committed to justice, we must face the injustices upon which our city is structured — injustices still persisting today. If we are to be intellectually competent, we must acknowledge the history of our city and think about how we might help remedy past sins in the future. If we are to be open to growth, we must be willing to learn from the stories of racism most troubling to hear in our communities.

CELEBRATING OUR SENIORS
Our senior class of ‘21 is looking toward their graduation and the school administration along with parent volunteers are beginning to plan some fun celebrations and ways to recognize this class who has had quite a different senior year.
100 Days ‘Til Graduation
On Friday, February 26, the school hosted a few mini celebrations to recognize our fine seniors. The day began with donuts in the morning before school (frosted ones with ‘21 on them in chocolate and yellow, to show the pride of McQ black and gold) followed by a pizza lunch for all seniors. The day finished by recognizing seniors at Flex with a “Class of 2021″ banner signing, sheet cakes that say “Class of 2021” and “100 Days” in school colors, and goodie bags for all seniors (McQ stickers, Class of 2021 AMDG rubber bracelets, Class of 2021 100 Days buttons, gold Hershey kisses). The goodie bags were also given to the remote students. Thank you to our school for providing these celebration moments as these seniors travel their final months at McQuaid and a special thank you to the parents who were there to assist and volunteered their time and talents to help make this event happen.

Agape Latte – 10.0
Coach Gary Parisi joined the McQuaid faculty in 2020 but has been a part of the community for several years, serving as an assistant football coach for the varsity team. On February 10, he shared his faith-based story, “I’ve Never Walked Alone” during Agape Latte 10.0. If you are interested in watching the presentation, or your sons would like to see it again, the link can be found here.
Agape Latte is a national coffeehouse storytelling series for students that features personal stories, delivered by a faculty member, staff member, or administrator, to share lessons about the intersection of faith and everyday life. These events feature food and trivia for Agape Latte swag! “Agape” is a Greek word for a kind of love that seeks nothing in return.

Please consider shopping at AmazonSmile to support McQuaid
How can online shopping with Amazon help McQuaid? AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon with the same products, prices and services you know from Amazon.com. The difference is when you shop at AmazonSmile a percentage of the price of your eligible purchases is donated to the charitable organization of your choice. So help support McQuaid each time you shop by setting up smile.amazon.com as your Amazon home page. To designate “McQuaid Jesuit” as your charitable organization, login with your regular Amazon user id and password, click on “Accounts and Lists”, “Your Account”, and under “Other Programs” you will find “Change your Amazon Smile Charity”. Thanks for making this extra effort to support McQuaid!
Shop Local Businesses with McQuaid connections
We know that alumni and current families own businesses that are open during this difficult time and we would like to do what we can to support them. Please consider adding them to your list of places to shop and visit in the upcoming months. A list of the business can be found here.
A CALL TO ACTION:
Attention Photographers – a call for pictures!

GOOD NEWS:
The Great Ignatian Challenge
Thank you to all who donated to the challenge! McQuaid proudly raised 8,500 pounds in donations to serve our local community food needs during this holiday season. All items donated will go to serve families who have food insecurity concerns – what a way to support those in need. Great job McQuaid community!
Clothes Donated to Saint’s Place
The Parents’ Association is very appreciative of all the donations of gently used clothing to My Brother’s Closet. Run by the PA, My Brother’s Closet is the place where we house gently used clothing donations that could be used for dress code, such as shirts, pants, suit coats, etc., and is made available to any student who may not be able to afford dress code clothing. Due to so many donations this year, the PA was able to make a clothing donation to Saint’s Place, and show how McQuaid is continuing to Be A Light in our community.

November 2020
As we enter the month where we celebrate Thanksgiving, the Parents’ Association will once again reflect on what we are thankful for. The answer is simple – the opportunity to connect parents closer to our McQuaid community! Although this year remains different than years past, we continue to be grateful for our parent volunteers, the collaboration with school leaders, and the ability to remain committed to creating opportunities for parents to connect. Our programming may be virtual for now, but we are hopeful and continuing to plan for safe, in-person events in the future.
All parents and guardians are part of this group and we would like to welcome you once again and encourage you to get involved. Keep up-to-date and informed by visiting our website here.
PA EVENT UPDATES:
McQuaid Jesuit Speaker Series – COVID-19: Where Are We Now, and Where Will We Be?
Did you miss the panel discussion from Wednesday October 21st? You can still view it here. The Parents’ Association was very happy to coordinate with McQuaid to bring this very informative presentation to our parents and students. On the panel were Dr. Michael Mendoza, commissioner of public health for Monroe County, Dr. Paul Graman, clinical director of the Infectious Disease Division and hospital epidemiologist for Strong Memorial Hospital, Dr. David Topa, P ’21, a pediatrician at Pittsford Pediatrics, and William Pearson, program coordinator for Rochester Regional’s Behavioral Health Department.
The Great Ignatian Challenge
As Thanksgiving approaches, the McQuaid community is joining in on the Great Ignatian Challenge. The challenge is a friendly food drive competition among nine Jesuit schools. The challenge, now in its fifth year, seeks to raise students’ awareness of hunger and inspire them to take action by working to fill their local food banks, pantries, and community centers with tens of thousands of pounds of much-needed provisions.
Last year, the schools participating in the Great Ignatian Challenge collected and distributed more than 137,632 pounds of food. Fordham Prep alumnus, Jim Rowen, will once again personally pledge $250,000 to support the schools’ efforts. While in prior years the monies have been allocated to supporting financial assistance programs, this year Mr. Rowen has asked the awards be applied toward offsetting COVID-19 related expenses incurred by each of the schools.
Donations can be made both in person and online.
In person: Foods can be brought into McQuaid for two weeks – November 9 – November 20
Donations accepted: canned beans, tuna, peanut butter, jelly (no glass jars), canned vegetables, canned fruit, tomato products, soup, broths and pasta are accepted.
Online: Click here to donate from November 1 – November 25
All donations will go to Foodlink whose food bank distributes nearly 20 million pounds of food annually to a network of nonprofit partners.
