Philip M. Minnehan, ’21 is still completing his college education, but that hasn’t stopped him from swinging for the pros. This past August, Phil competed in the 2025 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

The Amateur is the leading annual golf tournament for amateurs in the United States, bringing more than 300 of the best young golfers in the country to one climactic competition.  “My mentality at the U.S. Amateur was just to enjoy the experience and see how my game stacked up against the best players in the country,” said Phil. “It was by far the strongest field I’ve ever competed against, but I went in with no expectations and focused on playing my game”.

Phil’s relaxed spirit helped him shoot an impressive score of 70 (E) in his first round of competition. A second round 80 (+10) unfortunately caused Phil to miss the cut. Phil has golfed competitively at Old Dominion University the past three years, and was named a Cobalt Golf GCAA All-America Scholar his senior year.

Returning to Old Dominion this fall, Phil is pursuing his master’s degree in Maritime Trade and Supply Chain Management.

“I’ll continue practicing and competing in amateur events,” Phil said. “Once I finish my master’s, I plan to turn professional in golf and see how far I can go.”

Good luck to Phil and Go Knights!
